Wedding Wednesday: The Name Change Debate

Changing your name once you're married

One of the big things with getting married is the name change. Years ago, women never really had a choice as to whether they changed their name or not, as that was the norm - but these days there are plenty of options.

Every bride, groom and family has different opinions of what they think should happen. Some brides can't wait to take their husband's last name, others might hyphenate and others mightn't change at all.

Freelance writer and social media consultant

When I was born, I was name Kristy Irene Sarah Sayer. Why such a long name? Take a look at my initials...

KISS. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I never wanted to change my name unless I married someone with an S last name so I could always be KISS.

As I got older, my attachment with my last name only developed further. My first business name was ksayerphotography, my second KISS Freelance. I'm extremely family orientated and I'm the oldest in my family (and I don't have any brothers) I always knew that I wanted to keep Sayer as my last name.

I am a Sayer, but I'm marrying a Jones. A few years ago, as Jesse and my relationship started becoming more serious, I told him that I wouldn't be changing my name. I'm marrying a Southern boy with traditional values so of course, at first, he wasn't too sure about the idea.

He then realised the reasons why I didn't want to change my name and accepted my decision entirely. He's even wanted to change his last name for years and has even joked about taking my last name.

My mum changed her name as did every other woman in my family - but I'm going a bit of a different route.  While I'm not going to be Kristy Jones (like 501 million other women in the world) I am changing it.

Changing name once married

I've decided to be the pain in the bum whose name never fits on government forms, overruns on bank cards and will be changing my name to its new 26 letter extravaganza.

I'm going to be Kristy Irene Sarah Sayer Jones - whether that's hyphenated or not, I'm not sure yet.

Now we joke that my initials will sounds like "kissed ya" with them being KISSJ and my business names are still going to make sense. Professionally I will most likely remain as Kristy Sayer.

One of the best things about my new name will be that me and Michael Buble will have a thing going on! ;) (Me and Mrs Jones) Only kidding!

But tell me, what do you think about the whole name change thing with marriage?
What did/will you do? Are you influenced by your parent's/family's choices?

  1. This was a great post! Over here in Puerto Rico women do not change their names upon getting married, which is why Hispanics usually have very long names. I have no idea what I will be doing if I marry an American, but it is something worth thinking about!
The initials to your name are amazing though - KISS! How cool is that? I am glad that you were able to reach a decision, and I think it's great.
    Have a good one!!!

    1. Oh wow, that definitely explains the long names! What does that mean for their children? Do they take their mother or father's name?

  2. I didn't change my last name, although I'm thinking of hyphenating it one day.

    1. I think people forget that you can change it later on and that their decision is the final one. I don't know whether once I have children or as my professional name isn't needed whether I'll take Jones as my last name completely or what!
